Born in the 8th century on a small island in the middle of the Oder, Opole was the centre of authority of the Silesian Piasts from the 13th to the middle of the 16th century. It was then controlled by the Habsburgs and the Hohenzollerns. A predominantly German town (Oppeln) in the course of its history, Opole was badly damaged during the Second World War, but was fairly well rebuilt. It has a valuable heritage, fairly well preserved, making Opole an interesting and relaxing stopover. Every year since 1963, at the end of June, the Polish Song Festival has been held in Opole, which is famous in all countries.
