Opava, 30 km west of Ostrava, is nicknamed "the white pearl of Silesia", because its white colors contrasted with the color of the other Silesian cities, dark because of the mines. It is a charming university town. As in neighboring Silesia, the German influence has left its mark on the architecture, notably through the use of red brick. This is the case, for example, of the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary on the Upper Square. Lovers of modern religious architecture can make a detour to the Sainte-Hedwige church, designed in 1933 by L. Bauer to commemorate the victims of the First World War.
