About 30 km south of Sandomierz is the town of Baranów Sandomierski, which has a beautiful Renaissance stately home. The first written records of the town date back to 1135, but it is very likely that the Slavic settlement in this place is much older. Baranów, like many towns, was granted city status by Casimir the Great in 1354. A prosperous city in the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, thanks in part to its role in the grain trade and its rich culture of craftsmanship, it eventually suffered from Polish political instability and was sacked several times until its present dormant state.
