Lublin, with 345,000 inhabitants, is the regional capital and one of the largest metropolises in eastern Poland. It has a beautiful old town - its municipal charter dates from 1317 - preserved from the destruction of war and communism and recently renovated. Although it can be visited quickly, it is very "atmospheric" and worth a short stay (during the tourist season, in winter one might think that the apocalypse has swept away the population) especially since Lublin is the only somewhat dynamic city in the whole region. The tourist infrastructure is still modest, as in most of the other cities in the region, but it is in full development and the quality is much better than some older destinations. Often mentioned in history books, some events make it an important name in Polish history: the union that was signed in 1569 between Poland and Lithuania is named after it, the first government of independent Poland was formed here in 1918, the Soviets installed a provisional government here in 1944, and the 1980 strike movement that shook Poland was partly born here. The Catholic University of Lublin and the Marie Curie University are well known and contribute to the liveliness of the city's day and night life. Among the things to do in Lublin are the castle and the Holy Trinity chapel of Brama Grodzka and Brama Krakowska, a coffee in the Market Square (Rynek) and a visit to the beautiful cathedral. Not to be missed: the beautiful walk along the Vistula River.
