The small village of Łeba was founded in the 12th century, at the western mouth of the river of the same name. After being destroyed by a storm in 1558, it was rebuilt on the other bank, as the ruins of the old village disappeared under the sand. Until the 19th century, the village struggled to prosper due to the silting up of crops and the harbour. A number of infrastructures were built, including a dike, a road and a railroad, enabling the village to begin its economic development. It wasn't until the 20th century that the village began to expand as a tourist destination, becoming the seaside resort it is today.
