Some 60 km south of Hajnówka, towards Siemiatycze, following an epidemic that was miraculously contained in the early 18th century, survivors decided to build a church on the adjacent hill. This Orthodox place of worship is a major point of pilgrimage. Thousands of crosses planted by pilgrims form a veritable forest around the church. The biggest feast of the year is the Transfiguration in August, attracting over 20,000 pilgrims every year. Taking part in the celebration, which begins the evening before and continues uninterrupted until the end of the day, is quite an experience.
