While the name Auschwitz immediately conjures up images of Nazi barbarism, Treblinka is often harder to place. And yet, although less well known, Treblinka was also the macabre scene of the Nazis' Final Solution. Where the Auschwitz concentration and extermination camp is still well preserved, the Treblinka camp has nothing left to offer but a forest, a memorial and ruins. The Nazi forces planned its destruction so that the horror of their crimes would be forgotten. A visit to the memorial is an interesting and meditative excursion, combining memory and nature, horror and appeasement.
