Situated between Lidzbark and Kętrzyn, the charming village of Reszel has remained virtually unchanged since it was founded in the 13th century by the knights of the Teutonic Order. Indeed, it was spared the destruction of the Napoleonic Wars, the Second World War and the great works of the Soviet regime. German architecture is still very much in evidence, as evidenced by the characteristic checkerboard layout centered on a tiny Rynek. Only the wars of the 18th century disturbed its tranquility, before it slowly fell back into its gentle lethargy. Interestingly, it was here in 1808 that Europe's last witch was burned.
