A town of 35,000 inhabitants, Ostróda sits between Lake Drwęckie and the River Drwęca. Surrounded by fifteen lakes, the atmosphere is resolutely bucolic. It's a traditional pier town, home to boats belonging to the Mazurian Shipping Company, serving the Ostróda-Elbląg and Ostróda-Iława routes. The small town is very pleasant and boasts a Teutonic castle, where Napoleon I stayed for a few months in 1807. The town is a good starting point for discovering the beautiful views in the surrounding area. In the vicinity of Ostróda are two well-known resorts: Stare Jabłonki on Lake Szeląg Mały and Piławki on Lake Drwęckie.
