Choluteca is the largest city in the south, on the Pan American. The indigenous Chorotega from Mexico once inhabited the area. The Spanish Cristóbal de la Cueva founded the city in 1541, under the name of Xeréx de la Frontera. The city developed later as a Pacific port and as a mining centre (El Corpus mines). The urban centre has retained a beautiful colonial heritage (attention: nothing to do with León in Nicaragua for example). It is now an important shopping centre; the main activities are fishing, melon culture, camarons rearing, cattle. The atmosphere is overwhelming (heat up to 40 ° C) but pleasant at the same time: Choluteca is one of the most important cities in the country, yet it seems so provincial and so quiet! In short, there is little to do, but if one wants to discover another facet of Honduras, it is a pleasant stop. The author José Cecilio del Valle (1777–1834) was born there.Cedeño beaches on the coast are very busy on weekends and in season (at least four direct buses from Comayagüela to Tegucigalpa on weekends, many from Choluteca). The black volcanic sand is very hot: think of your sandals! Restaurants abound for lunch. A fast day in the surrounding area. Beautiful sunsets.
