Founded in 1524 under the name Puerto Caballos, the main landing point of Honduras in the time of Conquest (there was cocoa, silver or indigo and downloaded wine or oil), it was deserted after incessant pirate raids, especially in 1591 and 1596 (the harbour was moved to Omoa in the middle of the eighteenth century). Puerto Cortés had a renaissance beginning in 1870: it was served by the railways and the banana industry that was going to preside over the country's destiny for almost a century began to develop there. Today is the largest commercial port in Central America. Cruise boats are going there, spilling their stream of tourists who are rushing to Copán. A perfect highway leads to San Pedro Sula, 55 km away.A passage by Puerto Cortés is forced to win the village of Omoa and visit Guatemala. A passage only… Those who love the ports and their unusual or even soapweed atmosphere will not be disappointed, and can spend some good moments. Attention, the rate of AIDS is very high. The city is not horrible but does not have much interest.
