Located 90 km east of San Pedro Sula in the department of Atlántida, Tela is a clean and quiet Caribbean city with relatively little tourism. The surroundings (parks, gardens, beaches) are beautiful enough to warrant a stop of a few days. The Garifuna coastal villages are destinations that are popular with peanuts. Much more calm and informal than La Ceiba. The name "Tela" comes from the contraction of "Triunfo de la Cruz"; a village bearing this name (now moved more to the east) was indeed there, before the banana saga transformed it into a coastal coastal town. Its economy was then based on the consortium Tela Railroad Company which produced the famous «Chiquita» brand before the disease called «Panama» put an end to this glorious (cruel) enterprise. The beaches of the city are not unbelievable (except that of Villa Telemar) even if there is worse, but those of the surrounding area largely deserve a tan and relaxation. An ambitious project called «Bahia de Tela» seeks to promote mass tourism around the village of Tornabé. Originally planned according to the «Cancún» scheme (nothing but that!), he turned into sustainable tourism and environmental respect. It is a model project "sea snake". Indeed, the project is over thirty years old! He disappears, reappears, disappears again… After several controversies about the money englouti for this project (construction of roads, etc.) and the opposition of the Garifuna and Afrocaribéenne population of the region, the project finally saw the light of day in early 2014. The immense Indura Beach & Golf Resort, located in the Bahia de Tela, is a top-class hotel.
