Haugesund first appears in Snorre Sturlasson's sagas (1217) about King Harald. A port town thanks to the North Sea herring, Haugesund also benefits from the oil industry. In memory of fishing, the Sildajazz festival, held in August, features the world's longest herring buffet (www.sildajazz.no), while the Norwegian Film Festival is in full swing (www.filmfestivalen.no). Marilyn Monroe's father is said to have come from the region, and a statue of the actress has been erected in the town center. The island of Karmøy, south of Haugesund, hosts the Viking Festival in June.
