At an altitude of 700 m, in the heart of the Iron Route, this mining town is located at the foot of the fascinating Erzberg (Iron Mountain), which has been striated by decades of mining. The site covers one third of the country's steel industry needs. Underground mining at the mine ceased in 1986. The old installations have been opened to the public and a museum traces the history of the mine and mining techniques. Visits to the impressive mining sites are organized from a platform truck. The town of Eisenerz is home to a number of medieval houses and the Gothic fortified church of St. Oswald
