At the foot of the Hohe Tauern, the small town of Mauterndorf with its medieval charm is home to a beautiful castle which is the main attraction of a stopover in this locality. The site has been occupied by people since ancient times. A Roman road ran through the area and a fortified camp was set up in the valley. In the Middle Ages, the town came under the control of the archbishops of Salzburg. Mauterndorf, with its bulbous bell tower, has a line of beautifully preserved houses. One feels that the heritage is particularly well respected and valued here. From here, a winding mountain road leads to Tweng and the Radstädter Tauern Pass (1738m)
