S'MÜLLERBEISL

Austrian restaurant

Just a stone's throw from the Haus der Musik and the opera house, this family-run establishment is the perfect place to enjoy a generous meal and discover Viennese and Austrian cuisine at reasonable prices. While the lunch menu (soup, main course and dessert of the day) defies all competition, the menu also offers a varied choice of specialties, including of course the famous Schnitzel, but also Tafelspitz, a boiled beef that deserves to be better known. The food is homemade and fresh, the setting warm and welcoming. In short, everything we love, with the added bonus of a French-speaking waiter!

MELKER STIFTSKELLER

Austrian restaurant
4.8/5

A 100% Viennese restaurant, rather frequented by locals and yet excellently located. The great classics are there. The à la carte menu includes of course the Schnitzel, but also the crispy roast pork shank which is the house specialty. To stay in tune, accompany your dish with a good Viennese wine or a local beer. This is a good address to get the true meaning of the term Gemütlichkeit, a combination of "comfort" and "well-being". The vaulted room, which contributes to this state of happiness, is admirable.

A gourmet restaurant, wine bar and cocktail bar, this pocket handkerchief is a multi-talented place. Don't miss the grilled calamari served with its two mayonnaises, one with sherry, the other with basil, which are truly convincing. The main courses, a little more subdued in terms of flavor, come through thanks to ultra-fresh, high-quality produce. The friendly service will guide you in your choice of wines and help you discover a few Austrian gems. In summer, don't miss the superb tree-lined terrace in the courtyard.

This café was designed in 1899 by Adolf Loos, one of Austria's greatest architects and representative of "modern classicism". Renovated in 2003 according to Loos' original plan, the café has been restored to its original appearance with an architecture that renounces decorative elements. For this reason, the café was nicknamed Café Nihilismus. It was a meeting place for artists, merchants, students and travelers. Today it serves trendy bistro cuisine and inventive and excellent pastries.

This inn has been in operation since 1447. It is one of the oldest guest houses in Vienna. It did not receive princes and emperors, but celebrities such as Strauss, Wagner and Brahms used to stay here. It was also the home of an important figure in Viennese culture, Augustin, one of the creators of the Wiener Lieder. A place of pilgrimage for tourists, the Griechenbeisl has lost its Biesl authenticity, but still has a certain cachet and the food is still very good. Quite expensive.

CAFÉ EINSTEIN

A typical Viennese Bierbeisl with long wooden tables and benches, and a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. You'll come across regulars enjoying their beer and a chat. Enjoy traditional Austrian tavern fare and a long list of draught and bottled beers. A good place to try Viennese specialties such as Pfannengerichte (pan-fried). Breakfast. And there really is a large mural of Albert Einstein. It's also a pub that comes alive in the evening, with a DJ on Fridays and Saturdays.

If you're a fan of Jugendstil, you'll want to visit this charmingly old-fashioned café. Built in 1902 by Oskar Marmorek, a pupil of Otto Wagner, nothing seems to have really changed since then. Neither the furnishings nor the decor... And therein lies the cachet of the place! The address is frequented by a few students and regulars, the welcome is warm, the atmosphere relatively calm and the prices are more than reasonable for traditional Austrian cuisine. You can eat on the lovely garden terrace or indoors.

We could have believed the Privée Stadt deprived of true Stadtbeisl; in the wake of the waves of tourists, restaurants in the 1 st district have tended to lose their souls and to increase their prices fiercely. The Gasthaus Gasthaus is one of those who do not change. Cooking is plentiful, goûteuse, Viennese, and prices are honest. The terrace surrounded by shrubs acts as a bulwark on the outside world. In addition to the home-made dishes, different breakfast options are available at the morning visitor…

It's said to be the best Würstelstand- sausage bar - in town. It's right in the center, opposite the tourist office and Café Mozart, on the edge of the Albertina, in a pleasant corner, and it stays open really late. Minute sausages are always grilled in this popular little kiosk. The traditional Käsekrainer(smoked sausage with cheese),and Currywurst(served with curry sauce). A visit to this joint is an experience not to be missed. Another of the brand's addresses is on the edge of the Prater.

In the centre of the old town, this popular Würstel stand - hot sausage stand - is reputed to be one of the best in the city. During the day, it is the ideal place to quickly quench a small hunger and thirst between two visits, with sausages and beer at the end of the day. At night this address, open until the early hours of the morning, becomes cult. Here you can meet the fauna of the hungry night owls and find at the same counter businessmen on the run and punks on the go

Trust the queue in front of the establishment! This is Schnitzel perfection. This king of Viennese schnitzel is the epitome of the traditional Viennese way of life. Generations meet here to enjoy typical Viennese cuisine accompanied by selected wines. Tucked away in a pretty passageway between Bäckerstrasse and Wollzeile, the room quickly fills up. There's a lively brasserie atmosphere and you wait patiently for your schnitzel. Another address for this brand, founded by Hans Figmüller in 1905, on Bäckerstrasse.

One of the four Viennese addresses of this successful chain. With its pub atmosphere and large tables, this restaurant is a popular meeting place for students from breakfast onwards. As its name suggests, local and international dishes are ordered by the centimetre, but also by the portion, whether small, medium or large. A good address for small budgets and big appetites. Wide choice of dishes and sandwiches, salads and soups, vegetarian dishes and burgers. Also a long menu of beers and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Ideal for tasting the charm of Viennese cuisine in a charming setting. At Plachutta, the traditional art of meat preparation, praised by Emperor Franz Joseph, lives on. It's here that you'll enjoy one of Vienna's best Tafelspitz(Austrian stew), a specialty of the house. The terrace is very pleasant, and the Schnitzel is just as recommendable as the Tafelspitz! The company has two other addresses in Vienna and three other restaurants, including the Italian grill Mario and the wirtshaus Grünspan.

All the expertise of an Austrian brewery. A Bauerngröstl, a Rindgulasch or a Wiener Schnitzel and with this an Ottakring lager, a Schneider draught white, a König Ludwig black or a Grieskirchner. The house advertises itself as "the most gemütlich (comfortable) Lokal in the heart of Vienna". In the heart of the Bermuda Triangle, it offers a pleasant terrace in summer. A good place to try typical dishes from Wiener Schnitzel to Tafelspitz and juicy Spare Ribs. There are also a number of innovative dishes.

A small, vintage and little-known nugget from the west of Vienna where you can enjoy good Austrian cuisine, friendly, generous and without fuss. Come and melt into the decor. If you are looking for authenticity, here you will be served. No (or few) tourists, flowing beer, regulars and a setting that seems to have remained unchanged since the post-war period. The touch of modernity is brought by a young and trendy service. On the menu are the typical Gasthaus dishes, which are as invigorating as one could wish for, to be accompanied by a cool draught. You won't be disappointed!

The dishes are in French, but the preparation of the savory tartines, quiches and salads is enhanced by a real Austrian touch. Le Bol boasts a convivial setting and a warm atmosphere. Portions are generous, often including a bowl of salad, hence the name of the establishment. Sitting close together around the large central wooden table, or alone in a more secluded corner, you'll enjoy a pleasant lunch break and leave feeling full and satisfied. Reservations recommended. Another address: Bol Blanc Naglergasse.
