The geothermal heat to the north of Húsavík has been known to the inhabitants for centuries, and they use it for bathing and washing. In the middle of the 20th century, drilling for hot water in Húsavíkurhöfði revealed that it was warm sea water, too rich in minerals to be used for heating homes.
Instead of letting this hot water go to waste, an old cheese barrel was installed in Húsavíkurhöfði. The people of Húsavík could thus enjoy the benefits of the hot sea water baths. People suffering from skin conditions such as psoriasis found relief by bathing in the water, whose optimum temperature is 38°-39°C.
The water for GeoSea's sea baths comes from two boreholes, one near the cheese barrel and the other near Húsavík harbour. There is no need to use cleaning products or equipment, as the regular flow of water from the boreholes, between the pools, around their edges and into the sea, ensures that the water remains within the limits stipulated by health regulations.
