This small Ruthenian town looks more Ukrainian than Slovakian, but its only attraction is an oddity: a modern art museum dedicated to Andy Warhol, whose parents were Ruthenians from Mikova, a village near Medzilaborce. After the artist's death, his brother John made the trip from the USA to faraway Slovakia, fell in love with the place and decided to help create the museum. Apart from this somewhat iconoclastic site, the town has very little to offer. The site of fierce fighting during the First and Second World Wars, not much of its history has survived. A large Ruthenian community lives quietly here. At the time of our field survey, the Andy Warhol Museum was being rebuilt and is scheduled to reopen in 2025. To keep up to date, visit the museum's website.
