Abramtsevo is an estate with a palace located 80 km from Moscow (1h40 by car). Its owner, Savva Mamontov, was a great patron of the arts and the palace became a haven for many artists. There are painters such as Repine, Sourikov, Levitan, Korovine, Nesterov and Serov; actors such as Chaliapine, Stanislavski or Diaghilev who reinvented the Russian theatre in his private theatre; or writers such as Gorki. The house itself is very simple. The former artists' studio houses a museum of applied arts, where one can admire the enamels of Vroubel, a brilliant figure of Art Nouveau comparable to an Ensor or a Van Gogh.
