The beginnings of Coro (whose name means "wind" in arawak), founded on July 26, 1527, are representative of some of the ideas that led to Spanish implantation in South America. In the first instance, his founder, Juan de Ampíes, is dedicated to winning the arawak Indians trust. Slavery will therefore not take place until the day when Charles Quint, ruined by the purchase of his emperor from Spain and Germany, entrusts the exploitation of the Venezuelan harbour to the Wesler bankers. After Alfinger's seizure of power in 1529, and for more than years, Coro will serve as a starting point for the expeditions to the Eldorado research in which most of the conquistadors left their skin. Unfortunately, in 1546, when the concession was withdrawn from Wesler bankers, the Indians and their valuable irrigation system in the city disappeared. Coro is then hungry and demoralized. Soon, the first capital of Venezuela, the first épiscopal of the continent, was abandoned. The new capital settled in Tocuyo in 1546, while the ecclesiastical institutions moved to the current capital Caracas. On many maps of the time, Coro passes for a destroyed city. She will be saved by maritime trade with the Caribbean and the metropolis.Today, Coro is part of humanity's cultural heritage. UNESCO was due to the best preserved colonial city in Venezuela. Cobbled streets, wooden-framed windows, thick coloured walls: Coro is truly a magnificent city-museum in which it is nice to take a few days, this especially since the Corianos - as we call the inhabitants of Coro - are particularly pleasant and open. Coro is not an ideal place for seaside tourism. The beaches of the region (except the San Romain, difficult to access, and some beaches around Punto Fijo) are very poor, and sales most often. To top it all, they are swept by a rather violent wind that will only delight windsurfeurs.
