The main tourist centre of the Venezuelan Northwest a few years ago, Chichiriviche has experienced problems of insecurity that give him bad press. In fact, following a violent incident in May 2011, the President of the association of lancheros organized a march for peace in order to raise the awareness of the authorities by asking them for immediate attention, the installation of police stations and the establishment of more frequent controls and patrols. Let us hope that his demand will succeed and allow the village to live more calmly. Originally inhabited by the Chipas, its name means «where our sun originated». By arriving on Chichiriviche, the road that cuts the swamp allows, with patience, to see fabulous birds - pelicans, pink flamingos, ibis and black gulls - hidden in mangroves. The tourist city, which is over 50 years old, is populated by about 12 000 inhabitants. It is traversed by rather dirty streets, rather dirty, populated by stray dogs, tourists, countless Venezuelan holidaymakers during weekends and holidays. We don't come to Chichi for the city but to go to the park. However, on September 8 a feast to celebrate the Vallée de la Vallée and del Carmen transcends the city with a superb fishing procession.
