This forest island in a fairly dry plain was the third park in the country to preserve its tropical rainforests and the altitude forest. If it is not necessary, the visit of this park of more than 92 640 hectares, created in 1958, may still be conceivable, even if only for a walk in the humid forest which starts at 200 m above sea level, dominated by the Azul Hill, which rises to 1 450 m. The more you climb through the marked roads, the more the forest thickens and the trees become massive. This vast forest where orchids grow is also the refuge of rapaces (eagles, hawks) which criss up the sky over huge trees, which host lazy, parrots and other animals, jaguars and tapirs etc. But beware also some snakes among the most venomous, such as the ring snake (cascabel) or coral snake. That's why Inparques has planned five rest areas and camp (bring its sleeping bag). Information kiosk at La Macanilla, near Los Alpes de Tuy. Next to San Francisco de Macaira, you can also visit a former coffee hacienda, La Elvira, very well placed, or an old sugar cane refinery. Open the weekend in season. For all activities, you must apply for the corresponding permit in front of the Superintendancia office, which is located in the El Lucero recreational area, on the Santa Teresa-Phyto road of Orituco or at the National Parks Directorate in Caracas (see below).
