Ferns, located a few miles north of Enniscorthy on the road to Dublin, is a village with a rich historical heritage. The area was once home to a large monastery, founded by the King of Leinster in the 6th century. In the 12th century, Dermott McMurrough founded St Mary's Abbey, the ruins of which can be visited. The present monument includes the ruins of a cathedral built by the Anglo-Normans in the 13th century.
