The town is not as pretty as its neighbor Västervik, but its quality is that it is the departure point for ferries to the island of Gotland (and Öland). Oskarshamn, with its 27,000 inhabitants, is a port and industrial city nestled in a narrow bay in the Kalmar Strait, between the E22 main road and a featureless coastline. Saab Scania builds trucks here, shipyards build luxury sailing ships and the port exports timber from the Småland forests. All this contributes to the liveliness of the small cobblestone streets in the summer, leading from the harbor to the city center and the main square. The sea can be seen in the distance below. Five minutes from the central square, the Marine and Döderhultan museums, located in the building of the municipal library, are worth a visit (Döderhultan, who died in 1925, was a woodcarver whose figures, 20 cm high, represent scenes of peasant life). Oskarshamn offers two beautiful beaches, each about 1 km from the center. To the north, the sandy beach and the campsite Havsslätt, and to the south, the beach of Gunnarsö and its campsite on a more rocky coast.
