The town of Adjara is located 10 km northeast of Porto-Novo and is best known for its artisanal market. The market is held every four days. In addition to the famous iroko wood drums, you can find basketry and pottery. You can taste the speciality of the region, the hankpètè. This is a sauce made from pig's blood, a very popular dish until Porto-Novo.Every day, you can see how tam-tams are made and buy them in two neighborhoods of Adjara (Datin and Aholukomè), which have specialized in making them for over a century. Demand is increasing to the point that some tree species are reportedly threatened. The palm wine factory and the black river that winds through the lush vegetation are also worth seeing in this southeastern city.
