Bacău is one of Moldavia's largest cities, with a population of 144,000. Not much for tourists to see, unless you're a fan of Soviet architecture. Still, you can admire the pretty Precista church, built in 1490 by a son of Ștefan cel Mare, Alexandru. The surrounding area is well worth a visit: villages known for their crafts and traditions (such as Răcăciuni), spas and 19th-century mansions such as Comănești's Ghica Palace, now a museum of ethnography.
