Capital of the județ of Neamț, this town of 85,000 inhabitants has a pleasant little town center and a few historical sights, concentrated around Piața Libertății. This is where you'll find the ruins of the Voivodal Court (Curtea Domnească), a residence erected by Ștefan cel Mare in 1491. The town is surrounded by the Cozla mountains to the north (651 m), Pietricica to the east (530 m) and Cernegura to the south (851 m). For a panoramic view, climb to the top of Mount Cozla, either by road or by cable car from the railway station. In winter, you can go skiing on a small slope with a 900 m vertical drop. Piatra Neamț can also be a good starting point for trips to the județ monasteries, Lake Rouge and the Ceahlău massif.
