The first major town on the road from Oradea to Deva, Beiuș (10,000 inhabitants) is not very interesting for tourists, but it's pleasant and at the heart of a very interesting region. There's a small museum (Piața Samuil Vulcan, 1) and a big craft fair on Thursday mornings. In the surrounding villages, you can visit wooden churches (in Brădet, Rieni, Tărcăița and Mierag) and an interesting 13th-century fortress in Pomezeu. In Șoimi, west of Beiuș, you'll find medieval ruins from the same period.
