Located 100 kilometers northeast of Arad, Moneasa is renowned for its springs, which have been exploited since Roman times. It was a popular spa town during the Austro-Hungarian Empire, when aristocrats built sumptuous residences here. Empress Maria Theresa herself was a loyal customer of the resort. At the foot of the superb Codru-Moma mountains, the site is majestic. Sheer cliffs dot the landscape, and the Vaşcău karst plateau is not far away.
