39 km east of Oradea, this small town of 10,000 inhabitants is of little interest, apart from its 1830s Baroque castle, 17th-century church and the ruins of a 12th-century fortress. On the northern outskirts of the town, in the village of Peștiș, you can admire an 18th-century wooden church. Aleșd is also at the entrance to a region where a few sites are worth visiting, if you're on your way to Cluj. For example, you can stop off at Vadu Crișului, 15 km east of Aleșd, a mecca for ceramic craftsmen.
