Hunedoara, population 50,000, is the country's second-largest steel-making center after Galați. People come here for the magnificent Corvin castle. The contrast between this formidable fairytale castle and the towers of the huge factories it dominates is surreal. For the rest, the town is of little interest. The small Orthodox church of St. Nicholas (Piața Unirii) is worth a mention: built in the 15th century, restored in the 17th and 19th centuries, it is renowned for its superb 17th-century paintings.
