The citadel of Deva is one of Transylvania's most important medieval fortresses. Situated atop a volcanic cone over 180 m high, it dominates the town and the Mureș valley. The center is home to some fine buildings, such as the Bethlen Castle and the theater, in Secession style. The main square is home to a statue of the Roman emperor Trajan. The Dacian king Decebal is enthroned at the entrance to the citadel park.
