15 km south of Alba Iulia, on the way to Sibiu, this pretty little town of 27,000 inhabitants is characterized, like its neighbors, by its very German architecture. Even in the town center, the streets have a village feel. The central square is embellished by a pretty evangelical church, its bell tower topped with colorful tiles. Built in the 13th century, it offers a blend of Romanesque, Gothic and Renaissance styles. Also on the main square, the 15th-century Zápolya House houses a historical and ethnographic collection. The impressive timber factory on the outskirts of town bears witness to the importance of this industry in the region.
