The gateway to Northern Ontario, North Bay was established between two portages in the late 1800s. The town has always been a hub of culture and commerce. Situated on a peaceful bay of the great Lake Nipissing, renowned for its warm water and numerous beaches, it has seen the transit of the Amerindians who established their trading posts, the intrepid coureurs des bois paddling towards Georgian Bay, and then the greedy entrepreneurs of the industrial era interested in the riches of the North. The latter transformed the village into the important rail and road centre it is today.
