Second only to Charlottetown in population (16,000), Summerside has experienced an economic boom since the opening of the Confederation Bridge in 1997, which links the Island to the province of New Brunswick. Summerside is a good starting point for exploring the sites on the west side of the island. Highlights include: Spinnaker's Landing in the summer, the historic downtown area with its beautiful homes, the Saturday farmers' market, the Highland Storm Celtic Festival in July and August (including the College of Piping and Celtic Performing Arts), and the Summerside Lobster Carnival in July.
