Long known as the center of island agriculture, Mayne Island is working to preserve its pastureland and quality of life. Once a staging point for the many gold miners who made their way to the mainland, a few historic sites remain, including a few chapels built by the pioneers. In addition, Mayne Island is also a haven for writers and artists of all kinds. The island is served twice a day (morning and afternoon) by the ferry from Vancouver (Tsawwassen) via the other Gulf Islands and by the ferry from Victoria (Swartz Bay) several times a day.
