Nanaimo owes part of its development to the ferry that links it to Vancouver via the Horseshoe Bay terminal. Its central location on the east side of Vancouver Island and its harbour protected by two islands (Newcastle and Protection) have earned it the nickname "Hub City" in the past. Its history began in 1854, when 24 families of English miners came to settle there, after a five and a half month journey (passing Cape Horn). A stone (Pioneer Rock) and a ship's prow, reminiscent of the Princess Royal, commemorate the settlement of these colonists. Then the city developed thanks to the exploitation of coal and the wood industry.
