Fifty kilometres north of Victoria, this small town in the heart of the Cowichan Valley is home to an interesting First Nations historical heritage. Over 80 totem poles are located throughout the town, earning it the nickname City of Totems. This is one of the largest collections of outdoor totem poles in the world. Erected in 1985, these totems are a beautiful representation of the union of two cultures; the Quw'utsun' (Cowichan) people and the population (a symbol of the acceptance and appreciation of First Nations artists). They are also and above all beautiful and are the attraction of the city.
