In colonial times, Saint Louis was the most important town in the south and the birth of the Cayes is late if compared to that of other major Haitian cities. In 1786, one drew the plan of a new locality on swampy land in places, forming part of the very large residential O'Shiel. Oriented towards the sea, the Cayes expanded between two rivers, the River of Riviere and the Rivière de l'Islet, in the extension of the plain; this lack of elevation today makes cyclists happy.Much less history than the Cape where Port-au-Prince, she prides herself, however, like Jacmel, from the stay of the south américian américian Simon Bolivar who in 1816 prepared here his victorious expedition. The cayen architectural heritage suffered greatly from the 1911 fire and the multiple hurricanes that devastated the city. Cléo (1964) and Allen (1980) are still present in all submissions. Poorly damaged during the 2010 earthquake, it is the fourth largest city in the country, with a population of 45 000 to 46 000. Its port is one of the main parts of the country, where exports of cane and coffee sugar leave.
