The Copayapu ("golden cup") valley was inhabited by the Diaguitas when the Spanish troops arrived in 1536. Four years later, in 1540, Valdivia took possession of it in the name of the King of Spain. San Francisco de La Selva de Copiapó was only founded in 1744, and then the fabulous discovery of the Chañarcillo mine by the Scotsman Juan Godoy marked the development of the region, a development to which the town's station bears witness, as it was the site of the first train in Chile. Copiapó is an attractive alternative to the classic circuit and to visit the natural parks that border Argentina or the wild beaches that stretch along the Pacific.
