Monte Grande is a tiny village situated between a river and a hill, with just one main street. This typical Elqui valley village would probably not be known if Gabriela Mistral hadn't lived there and expressly asked to be buried there. Gabriela (her real name was Lucila de María del Perpetuo Socorro Godoy Alcayaga) was educated at La Casa Escuela, which you can visit. Everything in this little village recalls this great name in Chilean literature and Nobel Prize winner, and the locals are proud of the legacy the great Chilean poetess left behind: we'd love to tell you all about it!
