Lota, which means "small insignificant place" in mapudungun, deserves your attention despite its name. This big town is divided into Lota Alto and Lota Bajo. Lota Bajo is older and was mainly inhabited by fishermen. You can visit the parish church and its Virgin carved out of coal (coal crafting is a speciality of the region). Lota Alto, located on a hill, belonged to the Cousiño family who settled there when the mines were discovered; this is where mining life was concentrated. Here, the captains of industry have the right to sainthood while the miners rest in coal graves at the bottom of the mines.
