Vicuña is a small town where Gabriela Mistral (1889-1957), Nobel Prize for Literature, was born. It is a charming stopover in the valley with its old colonial buildings, 62 km from La Serena, and a convenient base for exploring the surrounding area. Since its official status as the Astronomy Capital of the World and the total eclipse of July 2, 2019, the city has been transformed somewhat, with a certain "marketing" geared towards observing the universe and contemplating the stars. It is true that you are under the purest sky in the world so do not miss to plan a night out to go and admire the sky.
