La Serena is Chile's second most historic city, having been founded in 1544, shortly after Santiago, to provide the new colony with a port. Its beautiful architecture tells the story of its history: firstly, because it boasts some thirty churches, and secondly, because you can read about the main stages in its development. The discovery of the Arqueros silver mine in 1825, followed by the discovery of copper towards the end of the 19th century, brought wealth and work. Although La Serena is the tourist center of the Petit Nord and an interesting base from which to explore the south and east, one night will be enough to discover the town itself.
