The city comprises two port areas, Coquimbo and Guayacan. The site was used as a landing place for Spaniards on their way to La Serena, but it wasn't until 1826 that it became a full-fledged port with docks and commercial activities. The world's largest copper refinery was built here. In 1862, a railroad line linked it to La Serena. Its industrial character doesn't make Coquimbo very attractive, but there are a few churches and remarkable houses to be seen. Coquimbo is also an excellent base for exploring the Limari Valley and its natural treasures!
