29 km from Puerto Montt, Calbuco is the capital of the archipelago of the same name. Composed of 16 islands spread out in the Gulf of Ancud, which separates the island of Chiloé from the mainland, the Calbuco archipelago takes its name from the mapudungun and means "blue waters". The town of Cabulco was also originally an island, but in 1965 a stone embankment attached it to the mainland. The town is famous for seaweed cultivation and salmon farming, and was founded in 1602 as a refuge from Mapuche attacks. After tasting a curanto, you can board a small colourful boat and visit the neighbouring islands. Lagartija Island is home to Humboldt and Magellan penguins.
