60 km from Rancagua and at an altitude of 2,130 m, this abandoned city was home to more than 16,000 inhabitants in the 1960s. Built in 1905 for the exploitation of the El Teniente copper mines, this real city started to decline in 1969. Walking around today among all the colorful and restored buildings, climbing up and down the stairs that replace the streets (most of the time), is a fascinating experience, especially since the site is impressive, in the middle of the pre-cordillera. The Gran Minería del Cobre museum, located in a 1936 building, presents in eight rooms the world of copper. Unesco declared it a World Heritage Site in 2006.
