The other capital of the maharajas in Bharatpur district has an undeniable charm for anyone seeking tranquility and authenticity. Located 32 kilometers north of Bharatpur, it is easily reached by bus for a half-day trip. Deeg has only one hotel and the locals are clearly not used to foreigners venturing here. Yet, this small town of 45,000 inhabitants is home to a very nice palace, combining Rajput and Mughal styles, built in the mid-18th century by Suraj Mal. The ruler built a new palace here before moving to Bharatpur a few years later.
