Krishna spent his childhood as a simple cowherd in this quiet village-like town, and it was here that he accomplished many of his feats. Vrindavan is therefore a very popular place of pilgrimage, with several hundred temples. Emperor Aurangzeb systematically destroyed the buildings, and the oldest temple, Govind Dev, dates back to the 16th century. The magic of Vrindavan lies in its atmosphere: narrow streets lined with old houses and hidden shrines, cows roaming freely, monkeys perched everywhere, many Westerners on the trail of Krishna, deafening loudspeakers... Last but not least, you'll come across many little ladies here, shaven-headed and dressed in white. These are widows who have taken refuge in the city's ashrams. They earn a modest living singing hymns to Krishna in the temples. We strongly advise you to go and listen to their melodies: it's a very moving moment.
