The presence of the Keoladeo Ghana Ornithological Reserve gives a major tourist interest to this large village of 205,000 inhabitants, a little dusty at first sight. Every year, thousands of migratory birds converge on these marshy areas, offering a magical spectacle during the winter months. Former capital of the Jat kingdom in the 18th century, Bharatpur also has a fort surrounded by moats and sheltering temples and palaces. The city is undertaking major restoration work on its historic buildings to develop its attractiveness. One of the former palaces of the fort has been converted into a very interesting museum, another has become a charming hotel. Despite this, Bharatpur is not systematically included in the itineraries of tour operators and travel agents, but this cannot continue. The combination of nature and historical remains make this a charming and pleasant stopover.
